Gone Fishing

Quiet a bit of backlog so I'll try my best to post them as soon. Have been busy with your Christmas orders which is of course a GREAT thing!

I received an email detailing a client's father favorite things to help inspire me for a piece for his upcoming 55th birthday celebration. This is what i came up with.

Daddy on a fishing trip

It was a real challenge for me as I mulled over the days to come up with a design theme but of all the list of things she have, the word "fishing" somehow beckons. I drew up a sketch and then, I sweat a little... coz I have never ever done a figurine before! Sleeves rolled up, fondant ready and with the sketch in front of me, I set to work. This, ladies and gentleman is the result.

I've also tried a few new things, beside doing the marbling effect to represent the sea and waves, it was also the first time I've tried doing the wood effect on a piece of fondant for the planks and pier.

I've added a fishing boat and of course, whats a fishing trip without the esky, beer and his ciggy to wait for the big catch.

The necessary fishing "equipment"

I've added a dolphin trying to attached the fishing hook to the message and bringing treasures from the sea too

Overall I was extremely grateful for the challenge and opportunity. All these cupcakes sits atop a coffee and walnut cupcake with coffee cream cheese frosting.

Garden Teddy Novelty Cupcakes

I have always wanted to do a garden teddy design theme, either on a cupcake or a whole cake. Opportunity knocks and I started off with a simple 6 piece due to time constrain and of course, the unfortunate power disruption which is the worst nightmare for every baker (second in line is to drop the cake during delivery)

Topped with chunks of peanut brittle

Roses for the birthday girl

The cupcakes were covered with little bit of chocolate banana cake peeping out to make it look like a mushroom... And if you ever wonder how you are going to receive your custom cupcakes, here's the packaging. And oh boy, did i get some curious stares when i pop over the Spring to deliver the cupcakes :)

Special delivery!

The next is a little more intricate. I've decided to cover the entire board with fondant to make the cupcakes pop and to make way for the candles instead of the traditional way of having the candles on the cake which ruin the overall design, so to speak.

Mushrooms on each cupcakes made from meringue

I've also realized, our weather is pretty humid for meringue mushrooms. It sorta melted away and lost its crunch :( so yeap, next time i'll stick to the usual meringue frosting, pavlova or macaroons when it comes to egg white. Hope you guys like it.

What a girl wants...

My very first designer themed cupcake! Since the request was for lemon cheesecake, I've decided to do individual fondant topper so it won't sweat all over when it is kept in the fridge. Sweet tangy lemon cheesecake with lemon curd cream frosting. Hope you enjoy it.

Facebook or Blog?

I've got a lot of you asking me whether I update Facebook or Blog first? Fact of the matter is my main "website" has always been Facebook Fan Page. Every goodies that goes out of my kitchen will do the "cake-walk" and their photos updated in Facebook. But there are some clients who don't do social networking sites hence the blog site was born. I do apologize for not updating as often as I can but I'll try my best.

Most of the updates here will be on custom projects and the story behind it :)  So if you wanna know the latest offerings and goodies, head on over to http://www.facebook.com/Appetit

See you there!

Everything you see here at Appétit are made-to-order specially for you. Therefore I would need a few days lead time to design, create and of course, bake. Here is a guideline for you. But if you do require a cake last minute, do gimme a call to try your luck. You just never know :)

Ordering from 'The Menu'
Everyday Cupcake Flavors
For quantities more then 50, please place your orders at least 7 days in advance. Else,

The Usual Suspects
Please allow at least 2 days advance notice

Extraordinary
Please allow at least 4 days advance notice

Novelty n' Wedding Cupcakes, Cakes or Cookies
    When should I order?
Please allow at least 2 weeks advance notice. Better still drop me an email once you got the date nailed down. It will take some time to finalize the design and it would be best to lock down your order as early as possible

    What is the pricing like?
Each project will be charged based on the cake and man-hour needed to complete the design. My quotation will be based on how intricate and complex the project is and the size of the cake you require for the occasion. Here is a rough guideline of the pricing to help you.
    • Cupcake 2" diameter starts from RM4
    • Mini cake 4" diameter starts from RM120
    • Birthday, Anniversary or any other occasion cake starts from RM200
    • Decorated cookie 3.5" diameter starts from RM3
It would be very helpful if you could do some story telling for me. It helps to get that creative juice flowing and would definitely make the recipient happier and wow the audience. Do bear in mind that these are personalized cake so each order will have a special meaning and occasion behind it. So the more information you can provide the better coz I don't own a crystal ball :)

    Hello World!

Can't help it since I'm from IT background. You know when you first started programming language? The very first task your lecturer will get you to do is to create a program that pops up and say "HELLO WORLD" and you go like. WOW I did that? Super cool...

Well that seems like donkey years ago :)

Some of you may have already come across Appétit in Facebook Page. I thought since most of you RSS blogs for update, I will start my very first "hello world" blog for Appétit and join the band wagon. Better late then never right?

A quick introduction for those of you who just popped by. Appétit is a home based kitchen and bakery in Kuching. Although now the bakery part of Appétit is churning out sweet fixes and gifts for Christmas none stop white the other lay domain for awhile, at least until 2010 that is. I started off with handcrafted Gingerbread Snowflakes,  perfect as gifts, table decor or ornaments besides eating it. Took me a lot of sleepless nights to finally decide snowflakes is the way to go this Christmas :p

    Handcrafted Gingerbread Snowflakes

This took me a while to complete. I wish I still remember all my maths formula for volume calculation. Chocolate, Oatmeal and Hazelnut cookies in a jar. All you have to do is add in eggs and melted butter, and just Mix n' Bake :) You could have your house filled with the smell of freshly baked cookies in under 30 mins. All the instructions is in the card.

Its everything Christmass from hanging your Christmas socks on the fire place (I'm sure we in kch don't need one), pressies, minty candy cane, snowflakes, ribbons on everything and of course Santa has to appear. But not fully thou, only his rounded tum tum with 3 star buttons
